Well designed small space gardens can have big impact. Even the tiniest balcony or patio can become a lush retreat with container gardening. Ornamentals and edibles work well in this environment, and carefully selected pots and plants allow for flexibility and creativity so you can move, mix and restyle with the seasons. If you are downsizing, renting, or in a small urban space, you don’t need to sacrifice the joy of a garden!
Choose the right pots
Terracotta pots create an earthy, rustic aesthetic and allow roots to breathe. They are great if you are after a Mediterranean look and suit plants that prefer a drier soil. Olive trees, lavender and rosemary look stunning in terracotta. For plants that like a wetter environment, try a lightweight fibre glass container. Ceramic pots offer an opportunity to introduce colour and pattern, while metal and concrete vessels provide a modern edge.
Ensure all your containers have drainage holes. If you are using a pot without drainage, add a layer of gravel or use a saucer to catch excess water.
Play with different sized pots
For dramatic effect, group similar pots of different heights or mix round, square and organic-shaped pots for a more eclectic style. This will prevent groupings from becoming monotonous and create a layered aesthetic with more visual depth, providing a dynamic and engaging space for you to enjoy.
Select suitable plants
Compact varieties will allow you to make the most of a small space. Dwarf citruses make a fabulous statement plant in a small space. Create your own mini veggie patch and pot up some lettuce, spinach, radish or chilli. Try combining your edibles and ornamentals. Mix herbs such as basil, mint, thyme or parsley with some violas and snapdragons for a colourful country cottage feel. Marigolds, petunias and pansies will add a vibrant touch to a balcony or courtyard.
Don’t forget to maximise your vertical space
Hanging baskets and stacked planters are great for compact plants like herbs, lettuce, or cherry tomatoes. If you have a wall that gets good sunlight, succulents and ornamentals like geraniums and Heuchera will thrive. If you have some shady areas, plant ferns, philodendrons or bromeliads. Be sure to use quality potting mix and water regularly.
Care and maintenance
Container gardens dry out more quickly, so they require more frequent watering. Always use a premium potting mix suitable for pots and apply a slow-release fertiliser or a regular liquid feed every few weeks.
